Good point. Though downtown Orlando seems better than Vegas, you are back in Florida, right? Do you park your car and then stroll around downtown Orlando, or is that dangerous? I did valet the last time there--so I didn't pay much attention. Last time I was in Vegas in '08-'09 I had a moped and a bicycle; no car. I did walk alot in Vegas too~~but was very careful because of all the craziness within a mile of the strip. I lived about 750 feet from Palace Station--so had a casino nearby to bet craps and do the sportsbook and 7 restaurants and a starbucks as my nearby restaurants. Are you hangin' in downtown on the third Tuesday of next month? It will be hoppin'~~I Was there on the 17th on a business trip to Orlando and it was a great kickoff! It is club23 and on the third Tuesday of every night it is GLBT night. They are dubbin' it 'The Republic.' Kinda sounds like 'Publix.' Is that a walkable area? peace/DG 43

I'll say that was definitely a problem in the murder trial I was involved with. Everyone thought the guy was guilty but didn't want to be the one responsible for his conviction...some of the women even started crying! FFS they knew he was guilty but didn't want to punish? This POS MURDERED someone! Fortunately I was Jury foreman and got everyone in line!

That's what's wrong with our system...no one wants to be a part of it....and they don't want to convict the guilty. So they walk the streets to kill again!
A jury summons is kind of a nightmare here. You get the summons, then you have a convoluted process of asking for time off work to go (unpaid, usually) then you have to call the night before and enter the summons number to see if they actually need you. Then you go downtown and try to figure out parking and where the hell you're supposed to be, exactly. After you show, you'll sit around half the day and may or may not even be asked to come in and answer the basic questions. Then God help you if you do get selected. Who wants to use all their vacation days from work to go sit on a jury? And what if you have no vacation time coming? You're supposed to starve because you couldn't work for a month? I mean, if I got called when I was unemployed, or a retiree, that would be one thing, but it's a real hardship for a working stiff. Hardship exemptions are also very hard to get, and "my employer doesn't pay time off for jury duty" doesn't count anymore.

I think it is that way for most places.

I got called once when I lived in the next county over, so I also had to drive about 40 miles to the courthouse, each way. I sat in a courtroom and watched a "it's so great to be on a jury" video, then we just sat there. Finally half the day went by and they sent us to lunch (which I had to pay for). After lunch they said the attorneys settled and we could go home.

So, I was out a days pay, gas for an 80 mile trip, and the cost of lunch. They did send me a check to reimburse me for mileage. It was about $12. Not even close to what gas cost me.

NOT worth it. Hopefully I am never called again.

I wouldn't mind doing it once to to experience the process. And to help the justice of one of my "peers".

It's a similar process here. If you get a summons, one of your options is to select a different date, up to three months out. That works for my scheduling. I picked today, when I called last night, I was told I did not need to appear.

I've been "in the box" and gone through voir dire questioning both those times, but never been selected.

When can they call you again? At Jury Services, I was told 18 months to 3 years, but it makes a difference if you served on the jury, or were rejected for the jury.

My co-worker went for Jury Services last June, was not picked to serve, and she got a summons to appear 11/19. Now that's not 18 months!

I am told, anyone know?, that if you serve on the jury, they can't call you for 3 years. But then, if I was picked for a jury, and the trial lasted 6 weeks, believe me! it would take me 3 years to recover from something like that! Or, God forbid, you're sequestered in a hotel for a week!

I already went through it here, hence my story of being left in the lounge.

A jury summons a nightmare here?

To me, a nightmare would be being picked for a jury that could last for a month or even 2 weeks! Having your life disrupted all that time, sitting there, day after day, listening to boring evidence, witnesses, lawyers, specialists!

Try to imagine it! Your whole life disrupted even for a week, getting up every morning, and going down to the courthouse!

Sat at the intersection of maryland and desert inn tonight for damn near 10 minutes. The light refused to turn green. Eventually the sea of cars decided to just storm the intersection and floor it through. Ironically, this isn't the first time this has happened to me in this city.
