Considering Nevada is one of only 3 or 4 states that doesn't have an income tax, do you think it's likely one will be implemented over the course of the next year or two?

With casino revenue way down and with no uptick in sight, where will the state get it's tax revenue without an income tax?

Just curious what you locals think.

Nope...it would take a Constitutional change which would be a very unpopular multi year endeavor.

Yup. At least for the forseeable future it is not going to happen. Note that property taxes are low as are gaming taxes and corporate taxes.

And we love the sales tax and room taxes as they nail the tourists.

As dyni said, our State Constitution would have to be changed and that isn't going to be happening.

THE CONSTITUTION OF THE STATE OF NEVADA

[The Nevada constitution was framed by a convention of delegates chosen by the people. The convention met at Carson City on July 4, 1864, and adjourned on July 28 of the same year. On the 1st Wednesday of September 1864, the constitution was approved by the vote of the people of the Territory of Nevada, and on October 31, 1864, President Lincoln proclaimed that the State of Nevada was admitted into the Union on an equal footing with the original states

9. No income tax shall be levied upon the wages or personal income of natural persons

THE CONSTITUTION OF THE STATE OF NEVADA

And in agreement with what Olecapt said, yes, tourists help keep us residents state income tax free.

May I ask why you choose to word it like this?

I mean, I'm from not only a tourist state, but a tourist town. While they may be a bother at times (like not knowing how to drive), without them, revenue would be down and thus the price for things that I'd personally like would be way up.

I've read a lot in the NV forum and I get the same feeling about others posts, the "disgust", if you will, for tourists. I just don't get it.

I agree with CanIbeyou.

When I lived in Kitty Hawk NC, I promoted it relentlessly everywhere I went. My reason was to draw tourists to help reduce my taxes. When I met visitors around town, I treated them like gold. I was happy to answer the same old questions over and over.

Now that I live in Las Vegas, I feel exactly the same way. I'm sure OleCapt's comment was in total jest as he is totally helpful on this forum. I do, however, think the point of welcoming tourists deserves support.

I am a firm believer that taxing more is not a good thing. If you take CA for example, they have taxed to death its citizens and they are still in a deficit. I am for cut spending, balanced budgets and keep the money in people's pockets. You will not make some people happy by cutting their funding, but should a you spend more than you make? Why would it be different for a State? These are bad times, and everyone needs to live within their means.

I should state that I visit Las Vegas quite often and I've never run into anyone who isn't nice.

I know it's hard to infuse wit and whatnot into typed out words posted on a message board, so if I'm "read" these comments wrong, my bad!

Actually I was poking fun at us Nevadans. We have always had a policy of nailing much of the cost of running the state and government on the Tourists. ie gaming tax...room tax...airport fees...sales tax...

It goes with our low tax libertarian roots. There is no government task that we won't refuse to pay for. The only good government is no government. Kids shoud be schooled at home...and really don't need much. Educate them and the turn into free spending liberals.

See my good friend AA702 post above. And he is a northern CA transplant.

Soon as you move here tax becomes a four letter word...Generally preceded with some variation on a word start with F....
