I am considering moving to Las Vegas, Nevada next year. I feel like I want to try something new, and I've heard alot of great things about las vegas. I am a single mom with a 5 year old son. I have pretty good work experience, but I'll probably be looking to find a job at blue cross blue shield of nevada. Im not sure what I should do. Please help if you have any suggestions about the city and its people. thank you in advance.

Everyone is looking for something different in a city. Maybe Vegas is the spot for you and maybe it's not. What were you looking for? I've lived in Vegas all of my life. There are a lot of great people here that I have known for years, but I will be honest with you, it is hard building relationships in this town. There are some really nice areas of town, great for kids and expanding their horizons beyond the TV ...Green Valley, Aliante, Summerlin, Southern Highlands, and Mountains Edge (3-4 yrs from now)... all great areas for kids. However, we didn't coin the phrase "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas" just for no reason. Like many large cities, there is an overwhelming amount of nightlife and not-so-kid oriented activity in this town as well. Where you live, and what you like to do for fun are key facts in making a personal decision to move to Vegas. I know that's kind of a vague response, but I hope it can help you.

Live in a nice part of town, like Summerlin or Green Valley. If I was confined to the not-so nice parts, I would never live here. Too scuzzy.

Be sure to visit first, drive around the whole town - good and parts - to get a feel for the vibe. I don't think anybody should move here without visiting - and walking along the Strip doesn't count. That's not life in Vegas.

It really depends on what you want. They have really cleaned up the "so-called" not-so-nice areas. Again, I think that every area has the same probability of any type of crime, you are not protected by the name of your neighborhood, lol. Renters, apartment complexes, shady residents, dark areas, can all contribute to crime anywhere. No one is isolated from it.

Default Moving from Texas to Las Vegas next year

HI, Im moving to Las Vegas, next summer. After school is out (June) my two kids and I are packing up and taking the first bus there. I read on other furoms here, that summerlin and green valley, are to good neiborhood choises(are there any others). What I want to know is, are they single mother with two children friendly with the living expenses (apartments in particular, also a good hotel that we could stay at for about a month while I find an apartment and a job). I am a medical coder, how needed is this profession in LV. And what school programs do they have for after and summer care for students. Do you'll have the YMCA. Oh I am from Galveston Texas. It's an historical tourist town. Kinda like Vegas without the casinos

mtaite gives some really good advice. I have not had any trouble meeting people and making friends. I think having children helps a lot...you meet other parents fairly quickly. Also I think a lot depends on the type of job you have. I am a teacher and we tend to like to talk a lot and making friends with other teachers is fairly easy. Where you live is also very important to how well you end up liking it here. I also have found that if you come from the Midwest you tend to do better here than those from other parts of the country. I think the lack of cold weather and humidity might have something to do with that.

Default Any Coders?

As mention earlier, I am a Medical Coder, I have been reading how some people have a hard time finding jobs there, I will try to have a job before I go there, but I don't have the money to fly back and forth for interviews. So that may not happen. Does Vegas have a lot of Hospitals and clinics? I'm am also a certified Medical Office Assistant, I speak a little spanish, only because, we are so close to Mexico, you have to be bilingual to get most jobs here and Galveston or Houston. How needed are Medical Coders there?

I'm sure you should have no trouble finding employment here. Your best bet is to apply at the hospital(s) of your interest. Or apply at them all. Most places these days you can apply online.
And since you are bilingual, you are in demand.

What type of coding are you trained in? It really will make a big difference on the income and demand of coders. The hospitals in Vegas in most part will require certificate, degree or experience in hospital trained coding. This means experience in inpatient and or outpatient record coding, not medical office coding which is completely different. Not sure of the demand for medical office coders.

Try going to this hospital listing website. Click the hospital and then the website link and view hospital employment for each of the hospitals. You might want to call and talk to one of the HIM directors, tell them your experience and or education in coding. In most cases I have found HIM directors to be extremely helpful to coders, especially those just starting in the field.

The other issue I would see is the financial. If you cannot afford to come out here for an interview, how can you afford to move to a new city and with two kids. You really want to be sure you have the funds to support you while you look for work.
