Cheap Shot.

The unemployment situation is bad..just like California. But it will recover some time in the next few years...just like California.

Schools are standard...the good suburban schools like the good suburban schools elsewhere. The poor schools are bad. This is actually a little better than Los Angeles.

Starting salaries are low but it is the southwest...which gives it a serious draw over say the rust belt. After a while the pay rises to adequate.

I have to disagree about "the sleaze factor" as Park Twain called it. I think it only affects everything if you think it does. Day to day living out here, most of us forget there is even that side of Vegas until we venture down to The Strip or Downtown to do some gambling.

+1 Pink, couldn't give you a rep so I owe you one. A week ago I drove to Pahrump via Charleston from the NW and that was an incredible drive. A first time visitor wouldn't belive they were in Vegas with all the beauty of Red Rock and Blue Diamond, tons of bikes going back and forth on the road. I've been here over 2 years now and that was my first time being in that area. Planning to take the family for a day trip once the weather gets nicer

Or Pinkie we could have the Admiral's Niece and Nephew take old Park-Twain for the sleazy tour of Santa Monica. They were both born and raised there. It is really neat to see the local sleaze anywhere with a real local.

Be careful, being "qualified" to teach is not the same as getting licensed to teach in Nevada. I have friends who have horror stories, about having teaching degrees in New York and other states, and were hired by CCSD, moved to Vegas, started working, and tried to go thru the licensing process, and ended up not getting licensed...so, then, CCSD had to re-do the contract, and they only got Long Term Sub Pay, not contracted rate of pay. So, look into getting licensed before you move if you want to teach school. I lived in the Buffalo/Cheyenne area, and was very happy. Also, nice area by Northwest Vegas, cheaper too.

I'm also talking about how it seeps into jobs and company decisions not directly related to casinos. I also formerly worked in SNWA. An organization very connected with local politics. Very tunnel-visioned organization. There is a tight lid on what can happen in that organization, believe me.

I have graduated from college. I am qualified to work as a teacher for grades preK - 1st grade. I am also qualified to work as a medical assistant. So what is the job outlook for those occupations in Nevada? Will I be able to sustain myself on a fulltime teacher or MA salary?

Why do I want to move? I jus need a change of pace. A new environment to live in. I want to live in a place that is good to raise a family. I come from the hood. I kno what its like to live around shooting and robberies. Kids getting killed. I don't wanna live in the same type of environment now that I have a choice. My children are in a foreign language schoo studying arabic. The other is in a creative arts elementary school. I love those schools. Are there any like that in LV? If not what good schools do u reccomend?

I don't plan to move now. Maybe in the next 5 yrs since I need to save money for my move and also now that I'm done with school my bf is now going to college. A sacrifice that we had to make. We decided I finish school first b/c I needed the education. If all else failed for him he could at least find manual labor unlike myself... ah enough of my rambling.

I would like to find a nice neighborhood that is kid/family friendly. Close to parks, libraries, jus close to the metro area. Somethin that's on or very close to the busline. Because God forbid something happens to our car. I wanna be able to catch a bus.

I'm not really looking to buy right now. I jus want a nice sized apartment, townhome/rowhouse, maybe a condo. I'm really only into renting right now. What is the price of a nice 3 bedroom apartment? Condo? Townhouse?

I'm also thinking of maybe starting school again after living and working n NV for a few yrs. I was looking at CSN to continue on to nursing. Any info about that school and its program?

I'm tryin to b as thorough as possible so that I can get good answers....

I don't have any relatives or friends in Nevada but I have a lot of family in Southern California. So while I'm on my own there. I still have help if I need it.

If you are interested in Nursing, I would suggest finush getting your degree before relocating to Vegas. The pay for a Medical Assistant is around $12-$14 an hour, my guess on the lower side these days. Certainly not nearly enough to live on and raise three kids. Now that's if you can even find a position now.
