What the heck's a "buttered roll"....for breakfast?

Buttered Roll/Hard Roll/Kaiser Roll

Okay those still on this thread: Has anyone found a really GOOD version of this in Central California near Brentwood-ish? A friend of mine moved there a year ago and is just being made MISERABLE by missing his buttered roll on the way to work every morning and I would LOVE to surprise him with a suggestion.

Ahh, this thread takes me back! I remember being able to get one of those for 50 cents, which I'd eat with a coffee cake. So bad for you, but so good.
