Slapped a passenger? For what? Good way to lose your job. In all fairness, I have seen the LIRR conductors take a lot of verbal abuse from passengers and deal with it very well. I dont know if I would be so patient.
He wouldn't wake up , so he took a newspaper and slapped....
Yes some conductors are outright slobs. Most I have seen at least look clean and pressed. They are in summer wear at the moment which allows them to not have the jacket and tie.
I have seen some that look really bad, we nicknamed this one guy Pig Pen once after the Peanuts character because it looked like a hobo and slept under the train.
Saw another unkept conductor once but I cur him slack since I found that he had just come off another train that had mechanical issues and him and a road car inspector had just come out from under a train.
I guess you generally accept setting the bar low. No high expectations of yours to be ruined.
