Most appear as if they have one shirt they bought for their LIRR job, which they wash maybe once every two weeks.

Yes some conductors are outright slobs. Most I have seen at least look clean and pressed. They are in summer wear at the moment which allows them to not have the jacket and tie.

I have seen some that look really bad, we nicknamed this one guy Pig Pen once after the Peanuts character because it looked like a hobo and slept under the train.

Saw another unkept conductor once but I cur him slack since I found that he had just come off another train that had mechanical issues and him and a road car inspector had just come out from under a train.

I have found the level of professionalism of LIRR conductors to be excellent, especially considering the crap they have to put up with.
