i use codfuel like many people. I watch the crude everyday at work & notice it has been moving up a little. went up another $2 for crude today.

In past years, I always notice a spike after the first snowstorm or a cold front in the NE

Before we converted to gas heat, we were on a contract with a local company. I always suspected that they made bigger deliveries when prices were high. If I were still on oil, I would pay for a service contract and buy oil COD. At least you have some control over it that way.

Didn't want to start a new thread to ask this question so I'll bring it up here. I was quoted a $3.77 per gallon price ceiling for a one year contract with a local oil company. I know this means I can't pay more than that for the year, but does this also mean for the most part assuming the price doesn't come down substantially that this is more or less what I will be paying all year? ie, they jack their prices up to the ceiling even if the market is slightly lower, like say a $3.65 COD price?

Finding a company to service a system that they do not deliver to is very hard.

If anyone knows a company who does this post it here.

To keep tabs on my oil company, I go to the NYSERDA site -- Average Home Heating Oil Prices - NYSERDA -- to check average weekly Long Island prices. If I don't get a hefty discount from those prices, the oil company gets a call from me. (With that said, I'm learning from the posts on here that I need to bargain even harder with my company. I'm a 25-year-plus customer and they still don't give me as low a price as they could.)

And to rocafeller05, you hit the nail on the head when it comes to COD prices. You may get a rock-bottom rate, but try getting someone to come to your house and fix the burner at 3am. My company has been outstanding and comes within an hour or two of a problem. That's why I've been with them so long and why I sometimes give a little on the price.

Finally, here's to 2013, when I hope to move to a home with gas heat (40% less expensive) and end all these headaches with oil contracts.
