For example, a household income of $150k will get you MUCH MUCH further on the South Shore of Suffolk than it will on the North Shore of Nassau County. The number of kids also matters.
Normally, I consider upper middle class on LI to be a household income of $150k or more.
(My family has a household income of ~90k and we lived pretty decently in SW Suffolk; so your lifestyle also plays a major role in things too. I read articles about people making over 200k in LI&NYC who are still struggling and I wonder what the hell they're doing with their money, lol.)
The problem on long island is people living as if they were upper class but are not. How many people driving 50k cars and SUVs actually make enough to afford those cars?
How many people buy these 5 room mcmansions but cant afford them?

They are living an upper middle class lifestyle, which may or may not be affordable on Long Island at $200K - too many factors to list there to say whether it is or not. But upper middle class usually means a few vacations a year at nice resort (not the Holiday Inn), including ski vacations with owned equipment in the winter, a couple luxury cars, and at least a junior membership at a country club.
Also, 30to65at55: are you serious when you write "You must be dirt poor. 10 year old cars for people who are almost on welfare."?
I drive a 1998 6cyl Camry. It runs-like-new but doesn't smell-like-new.
So what?
I live an upper middle-class retirement, travel the world, and want for nothing.
That's because I don't lease a car every three years!
unless you're a small business owner or can write it off, leasing is for the nouveau riche. It's tacky. Even though cars are ever-decpreciating assets, I'd rather own mine.
And tell all the people in 15 yr old diesel Mercs in Old Brookville that old cars are for poor people. If they function, they are for prudent people.
That said, I wouldn't be seen in anything but an audi :P
