What kind of restaurants do you want more of on LI? I am talking about sit down table service.
Obviously there is an overabundance of italian cuisine, and some Americanized Seafood, diners, and steak places, and chinese. There is a surprising number of BBQ places. I know of one German Place, Plattdeutsche.
I eat at this french restaurant in Queens, and he said there is a deadzone for French Cuisine on LI. I was talking to him about the Wayne French Kitchen in Oceanside. Is this true? Is LI a deadzone for French Cuisine?
Have you ever travelled abroad to somewhere besides Italy, and ate, and was like, darn I wish I had this kind of food on LI?
LI is where a new Outback opens on a friday night and the waits are 2 hrs long. It's as pointless as the "why do young people leave LI?" question. LI and interesting food choices aren't usually said in the same sentence.
Unfortunately there has always been a dearth of French restaurants on Long Island.
There was a fantastic one during the 1980s in Smithtown called Lafayette. The chef was Antoine Dabo, who was Croatian but close enough, LOL. His sauces were to die for and we were there every weekend. Antoine was a restaurant owner's nightmare because he would order in super expensive ingredients and finally the owner decided to stop bleeding red ink and replaced him with another chef. That was the death knell for the restaurant and it's been two places since then. It's currently the Garden Grill and has been that for quite a while. But it ain't French, LOL
Antoine went to La Marmite in Williston Park after leaving Lafayette so that was another French restaurant back in those days (late 1980s into early 1990s.) Don't know what their menu is like nowadays, haven't been there since the late 1990s after Antoine left.
There is or was a French restaurant in Greenport; at least there was about 10 or 11 years ago. One of the few places that actually had a wide selection of crepes on the menu. Cannot recall the name but it was in a slightly ramshackle white house on the left just as you approach the business area of Greenport on 25A. I got the impression that the place was not doing well; only ate there once, for lunch (crepes, of course.)
Health problems have kept me out of restaurants for the past six years so I have no idea what's currently out there but I do know that French restaurants have always been relatively rare on LI.
Oh, just remembered, there is one in Manhasset called La Coquille that has been there forever. I used to work near there during the 1970s and I see they are still around:
It's gotten a lot better the last 5 years or so. A lot more diversity of Asian food especially around Stony Brook area, better Mexican places opening, more diverse Latin food. Finally Long Islanders are appreciating something more than Red Sauce Italian, take out Chinese, and diners. Boring.
