Shirley, Mastic, Mastic Beach...
I've been hearing (for the past 20 years) that Shirley and the surrounding areas are making a comeback. Anyone know if this is finally coming true, or just rumor?

With homes going for $300,000 to $400,000 there now, I would think that has changed who can buy there. Twenty five years ago, little bungalos were sold for $20,000.

I bought a house there 2.5 years ago for a beach house and go out every weekend from brooklyn. Brooklyn has far worse neighborhoods than Mastic. I have seen Mastic at its worst, I grew up there. But you have to remeber that we are sandwiched by beachhouses of Bellport and beachhouses of the Hamptons. Anyone who dosen't see the potential there is just blinded by the news. There is good and bad evrywhere. I travel to China all the time and no one is complaining about how bad they have it even though I see whole neighborhoods flattened with no electricity. We complain just to say "I come from a bad neighborhood" but we are sitting oceanfront. I just had a party in beach party in Mastic where 35 freinds came out from the city and a majority are now interested in doing the same....buying a beach house by one of the more beautiful beaches the shores of LI have to offer. Another thing, there is no wait in the bottleneck headed to the Hamptons. I would rather be in my backyard for an extra 1.5 hours than in a car sitting in traffic.
I truly love Mastic get a hold now and get in there before everything is too expensive.

Yes this is true, I have a beautiful home in the Mastic area. My neighborhood is quiet and my neighbors are friendly. I have had no problems so far, and all the surrounding homes are kept up.

Not that I have seen. I wouldn't buy there. There are better deals to be had in much nicer neighborhoods.

I got news for you, that land mass you see from your "oceanfront" home isn't Europe...it's Fire Island.
And I'm not looking to disparage you're little slice of paradise, but what percentage of homes in that area are actually on the water? It's obviously a very low number. My point is that your experience out there is going to much different than the VAST majority of people in those neighborhoods.

I just bought a house last month, but I started out looking in the mastic/shirley area. My kids told me not to..it has a bad reputation. My kids are 19/20 ish. They said its really bad. My hubby said Mastic by the water can't be that bad as property by the water is usually expensive. Plus the school district is supposedly really bad. I have no proof of any of this...its just what I heard, from my kids friends and family. It was enough to keep me from looking in that area. The rumors of the school district is the biggest reason I didn't move there! And the drugs!

Probably not just someone heard about it which is usually the case.
