The winter of 2006 it cost me $4,250 to heat the last house I lived it. Approx 2000 sq ft. Why did it cost so much? Older home built in 1920's not insulated well, old windows, drafty. I moved out. I can not imagine what it would cost to heat that house this winter coming when it was only $2.29 at the time I was heating that one!
I now live in a 2 bedroom ranch approx 1500 sq feet with a full basement. All new windows, well insulated and updated oil burner, HW heater etc.....
Last winter it cost me $1,500 to heat this house.
New windows and good insulation (and size of home) make a large difference!

Actually windows do not help that much. A new window is only 9% more eff. than an old window with storms. Unless you have aluminum sliders....another story.
Insulation and air sealing are the 2 best improvements for energy savings.

You are right. The main reason we go new windows for our 80-year-old house is because you needed brute strength to open them, and they looked horrible. The energy savings were a nice bonus.
How do these window companies have the chutzpah to advertise that your heating bill will go down 40%?
just beware that oil prices have skyrocketed. I was on a year long budget plan that just ended for $2.49 a gallon. The new and best contract we have after much shopping around is a cap of $4.39 a gallon. Te previous owner's bills may not show this jump.
