Because the towns don't automatically adjust the assessment of homes; it's up to the homeowner(s) to grieve their taxes if they feel taxes are higher than they ought to be.
After being turned down by one of the big companies three years ago (I believe we're not supposed to name names), I successfully grieved my taxes the following year. It's time to to it again!
