Hi, love this forum, it has helped me tremendously in the past 2 weeks! Thanks.

We have 4 children, and are considering a move to Garden City. We plan on sending the kids to SD 18. My 4, almost 5 year old son will be entering Kindergarden in the fall.

Currently, he is enrolled in a wonderful CTT (Collaborative Team Teaching Program) in Kew Gardens; 20 kids = 10 regular neighborhood kids (behavior modeleing) and 10 spec ed kids. (various issues, but high functioning). They have 1 Regular Ed teacher, 1 Spec Ed teacher, and 2 aids. He is thriving in this environment, and his teachers plan on recommending him for the NYCDept of Ed CTT program as well.

Does anyone have any personal experience with the Spec Ed in District 18? I went to the Administrative building today to get info, but the person wasn't there. I understand they don't have CTT there, but I'm not sure what else similar or equal they offer. or if another nearby district offers it.

BTW, my son has Sensory Integration Disorder, and Dyspraxia...a developmental coordination disorder. Very bright, and sociable,
no known cognitive delays, etc.

Thanks KM

I don't personally know anything about the Garden City Schools but as a special education teacher, I can tell you that the IEP (Individualized Education Plan) is a legal document. The school system he belongs to has to implement it or risk being out of compliance with NYS. It is the IEP that determines the student's least restrictive environment (small classes/CTT/Resource room, etc). Occasionally, schools will try to change an IEP but as the parent you have the right to request a hearing and an evaluation by a third party. Hope that info is of some help to you. Sorry I don't have specific knowledge of that school district.

Thanks for your input, Karen.

Do you work in Nassau county?
Do you know of any school that does have a CTT or similar program in Nassau?
I have heard that Garden City is good about sending a child to another nearby school that has a better suited program for them. (least restrictive)

What is an average sized Regular Ed class in Nassau. His teacher told me the other day that he probably would be ok in a regular ed class and being pulled out for therapies, if it was on the smaller side (17-18 kids).

Such a tough decision. I don't want to make any mistakes.

Kathleen
