You're lucky you didn't go to Brookhaven. Your son would have waited 9 hours to be declared "Dead". You would then have to go to a better hospital just to get his condition upgraded to "Alive".
You should not go to SB for relatively minor emergency issues like cuts and broken arms and things like that. They are a trauma center and their focus is on people who have half of their brains hanging out of their skulls.
Stony Brook is horrible. If you have a "minor" condition, find a community hospital. If it's a more major condition, make the trip to North Shore/LIJ or Winthrop.
For those of us out in Suffolk, the schlep to NS/LIJ or Winthrup for an emergency is a bit out of the question.
I remember when I had my first gall bladder attack. The ride from Rocky Point to Mather felt like hours as the pain became more and more intense. We had to pull over several times as I became physically sick. I wouldn't subject anyone in that pain to an almost hour long drive.

Some of the people in the waiting room only have half a brain. Prior patients?
I was in stonybrook 9 years ago for a month and then my son was there for an additional 4 weeks.
Last night was just pathetic. How come a hospital has no hot water and heat ; I dont care what construction is going on ; there are peoples lives at stake here ; construction has been going on there at least for 10 years. They should have it kind of figured out that you cannot have people in a hospital in 40 degree weather without heat or hot water.
The difference between hospitals is clear ; one cares about patients, the other cares about the bottom line.
The other thing is that there is such a differrence of opinion about what to do with the flu ; do you go to er, do you treat it at home ; what if my son got it so bad and i didnt go to the er ; then what? His temp was going up After I gave him motrin and a bath, so as he does have a history of lung issues, it was better to be safe than to be sorry. At what stage do I say ; ok, we are off. I didnt expect no heat or hot water. That is a total disgrace.
I have been in all four hospitals in the area ; St. Charles, Mather, Brookhaven and Stonybrook. at some stage in the past few years. Surely a hospital is a hospital and their primary focus should be on taking care of patients.
Well then you've learned your lesson then haven't you?
Now being a HC worker and having worked in some of the previously mentioned hospitals I'll say this, depends on what you want. Like others have said if you get shot in the face, SB. If you've been shot in the face and would like an infection to go along with it, Brook. Peconic used to be OK but has since gone downhill but they are definitly trying to claw there way back up. Andy Mitchell has working his but off to attract patients to that hospital. Mather is nice, chest pain ER is a draw and I personally know people in Rad. Actually I know many people in all of the hospitals in Rad. 45 mins for an X-ray is bad but in their defence they SUPER understaffed. Anyway hope the little one is OK and this flu stuff is BS.

Jeeez did you take a moped?
Hours to Mather?
How about less than 15 min from RP driving with a leadfoot and appendicitis.
Not the wait in the ER...thats another story.
St Charles is usually right in right out and great care.
I prefer it to Mather and USB.

I've driven from RP to St Chas in labor. Mercifully it was late at night: absolutely no traffic. I would have lost it getting caught behind a blue hair!
