You convinced me!

I am voting NO on the budget this year. Raise your own damn taxes if you want to keep throwing it away.

I'm voting no on my local budget too, but it really won't matter. They'll fire the lunch ladies, security, etc. You know, those who make 10 bucks an hour or less. The big bucks. Because they're the real problem, not the teachers.

I always thought I would advise my kids to become teachers, but after taking a very unscientific poll on here, I think I would advise otherwise. A teacher should be able to live comfortably and hopefully live in the community in which he/she works. If the community does not want this they are going to end up with a revolving door or college grad who jump ship as soon as they can. Bottom line, though, is that this mentality will save money and keep taxes slightly lower. Unfortunately the lower property values we will all have will make revenues much lower and we will all get an increase in taxes due to that. I guess in some ways it is a lose-lose situation, but I would rather pay 9,000 in taxes for very good schools with veteran teachers than 8,500 for poor ones with transient rookie teachers.

some of the teachers LI hires are sooooo bad. I have a friend who keeps getting let go from her teaching jobs and keeps getting new ones! Some people are just not cut out to teach but people like the hours and summers off so they go into it for that.

I agree with you about the veteran teacher thing. That's why I get annoyed with the system b/c my tax money is going to pay people who don't know what they are doing or don't care.

(a lot of teachers are passionate about it and good at it...but there are a lot who are just plain awful).

Is this not true in any profession?

I agree that the tenure system should be revamped. Weeding out the bad few is preferable to lowering all teacher salaries to the point where the true professionals go elsewhere.

Obligatory " teachers have to pay property taxes too"

Obligatory "But I have a Doctorates' degree I deserve the 150K for working 160 days"

Obligatory " I take work home every day"

Obligatory " We don't get paid for the summer & holidays"

Your first three statements are correct. Teachers do pay property taxes, too. Most people with doctorate degrees make more then 150K. Teachers do take work home every day.

As far as the summer and holidays go, how many Long Island parents would support year round school?
