Herricks PTO mommies are pathetic and unfortunately have all drank the School District Kool Aid!
They took out a 1/2 page ad in Friday's Newsday asking taxpayers to approve the budget re-vote or else:
*Class sizes will increase
*transportation will be cut
*programs will be cut
*supplies & equipment will be cut
Its all nonsense. The Teachers & administrators basically told the taxpayers and children to "drop dead" by refusing to do the right thing by taking a meaningful salary freeze!
Taxpayers in Herricks should VOTE NO and watch the teachers union blink when layoffs will be threatened. Trust me there will be no cuts...money is always hidden in these bloated budgets and the teachers union will blink! Vote NO on Tuesday. The entice County will be watching. Send the overpaid part time teachers a strong message!

I've been involved for over 30 years in my district and the PTA mothers and fathers are very keyed in to what is going on financially in the district. The problem in many places lies with the fact that information isn't shared with the families in the PTA unit. Meaning, the PTA president etc is supposed to get lots of info from the district admin during Council meetings and board meetings and they are supposed to bring that info back to the parents at the next PTA meeting. Doesn't always happen.
If you've got a bunch of "mommies" that do nothing but fundraisers all year, then you've got a pathetically clueless community.
I say it is the individual's responsibility to get all the information they need to make an informed decision at budget time, or any other time.

I don’t think the PTA is the correct group for getting information out on the budget. There are BOE budget meetings throughout the year but surprisingly little information is made available. The public should be made aware of what is happening relative to budget particularly teachers and administration contracts over the course of the year. I can guarantee that you can go to the minutes of the BOE in any district and will see nothing in the way of the budget.
If these BOE’s continue to ignore the reality of the world they are asking for trouble, no one wants to punish the students but these constant increases are getting intolerable.

Your right. The PTO's are really the political arm of the Superintendent's & School Boards. They routinley drink massive amounts of Kool Aid especially when its budget time. Has anyone ever heard of a PTO not promoting the School Budget?
