Away from HS and college the most tried and true way to meet people is on the job. Going out for a drink after work is what that's all about! Another way that has worked for young people I know is to find a roommate close to their age. It really just takes meeting ONE person and then you meet the people they know, and the people they know, etc. Starting cold, just meeting someone, somewhere (club, park, etc) isn't as likely since most people don't feel comfortable with someone who doesn't have at least a loose connection to them already. Sometimes it happens though, you never know. Also try Meetup groups that do things you are interested in doing. And don't overlook people who are older or that you don't have much in common with. Maybe you don't want to hang out with them all the time but you never know who you will meet through them.
