Are there any vacation/resort towns within 2-3 hours (or 50-100 miles) of the Los Angeles area? I'm thinking of something very refined and popular, a la Southampton, NY.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Ojai is great. It's a nice getaway to a small town that's relaxed, fun things to do depending upon what time of year (tennis tourney, concerts, art events, bike marathons, etc.). The weather is beautiful year round (except a hot spell a few weeks during the summer), so lots of hiking, mountain biking, etc. Check out the Ojai Retreat, and other B&B's for a quiet (and usually less expensive) place to stay. The visitor center/Chamber of Commerce has the best info (search Google).

north of santa barbara along the coast is also nice (think san luis obispo and pismo beach). also, i've never been personally, but people also rave about cambria. however, that's probably further than 3 hours. i've also heard positive things about solvang and the wine country in that area.
