There are a jillion in Pasadena, but I've only tried Rubio's and Chipotle which are both chains. Can you recommend any exceptional ones?

all the Mex food in Pasadena is pretty generic & blah, but my co-worker raves about the alta cucina at Babita just down the way in San Gabriel. I haven't had a chance to check it out but she says it's better than Sedlar's Rivera or Playa. For traditional Mex i head over to Highland Park, like Antojitos Guerrero and Huarache Azteca. Both are landmarks for LA's hispanic immigrant cuisine.

I love El Cholo in santa monica, and i believe they opened one in Pass. I'm not sure of the quality of food at that location, but the SM one is good.

+1 on El Portal

RE: El Cholo... i think the quality/taste has suffered since they closed the Fair Oaks location and moved to the Paseo.

Tonny's on Lake near Mountain. Great food. Inexpensive. Good atmosphere. Avoid the chains, and the other overpriced and overrated places listed above. The Ranch Market on Orange Grove and Los Robles also has very good food.

Go to Lupita's...it's on the corner of colorado and sierra madre. Little dive but the food is good!

Also La Fiesta Grande on colorado near the Paseo.
