Seriously, Jack Sparrow.

You can look into Bunker Hill Towers and the NUMEROUS lofts Downtown for short term rentals. I lived Downtown for 3 years and I had a great time. It's the most "city" part of L.A., with Mid-Wilshire/Miracle Mile a close second. Going to MOCA, The Standard, Disney Hall for performances, the AWESOME food at Grand Central Market (like a permanent farmer's market/ethnic food stall bonanza) is lots of fun and will give you lots to say to those who think L.A. is devoid of "culture".

Another place to consider is Long Beach. There is a MetroLink public transportation train (similar to a subway train, but above ground) that goes down into Long Beach and heads all the way up into Downtown LA. From there, you can either walk or take a bus, depending on how far your office will be from Union Station. Do you know the address or building you would be in?
The building is 350 South Grand St.

Is it actually possible to commute using the MetroLink? I've never heard anyone say they use it, so I assumed it wasn't really practical... Does it run pretty well, or is it one of those public transportation systems constantly plagued by hour long delays and all that good stuff?

This is all really helpful -- any other tips people have for a potential transplant would be much appreciated!!

Depending on where you live, it is completely possible. If you want to live near the beach, definitely go with downtown Long Beach because it is quite urban, there is a nice beach, and the MetroLink goes through it. The Blue Line goes from Union Station in downtown LA and goes down into downtown Long Beach where it makes a loop that looks like a square with one stop near each corner. Take that up to Union Station, transfer to the Red Line. Get off at the Pershing Square stop and either walk three blocks/less than .5 miles or take a bus to your building. The only downside is that you go through Compton and Watts, but I have taken the Metro through there and never felt threatened before. Many people ride it and it is quite crowded, contrary to common beliefs, so there isn't much to worry about. There were actually quite a lot of white people riding it, which I didn't expect. But, if you do feel uncomfortable, just mind your own business-bring an old iPod or CD player (in case it gets stolen) and stare out the window. You probably won't have to do that though. I felt completely safe. If anyone discourages you from using our Metro, ignore them. They are paranoid and think the worst...your safety is fine on the Metro (that is everyone's main concern with it).

This is Downtown Long Beach

All the following listings are in Downtown Long Beach, your best choice for urban living where you can rely on public transportation and close to the beach. Downtown LB is very walkable, so if you can handle the distances to the stops by walking, don't worry about the safety of walking to it.
This is a good listing-Less than 1/4 mile to nearest Metro stop and about 1/2 mile to the beach. The size would be OK for you coming from NYC.
