When I was a kid, it was 5¢ a scoop. Triple scoops were really special. We usually went with a double.

Let's hope that they don't change the recipe.

Albertsons plans to keep the Thrifty brand alive and will sell the ice cream in its grocery stores. But the two companies did not answer questions about whether the ice cream will continue to be made in El Monte, or whether they might change the tastes and pricing that customers love.

"Thrifty ice cream — a portal to childhood — is being sold to Albertsons. What does that mean for its future?" Thrifty ice cream

Well, it isn't the same ice cream it was a long time ago when I used to get those 35-cent cones. That was such a good deal even back then. The quality was way better too.

Heck, I remember when they were under .50 for a triple dip. I also remember when a banana split, at the 5 and dime story was a quarter on special. Ok, so I am over 50 or 60 or 70 or even 80.

I remember that the marketing worked and we felt ripped off because we had to settle for the Thrifty's and mom would never get the Baskin Robbins a block away. We also bugged her for McDonalds 5 miles away instead of homemade. Now there are 3 McDonalds within an easy walk from that house, and a forth in a mall recently closed

Through June 2nd cones are $1 off with your rite aid number. It’s not .35c like when I was a kid, but we enjoyed .98c cones yesterday. I don’t know if it’s worth the trip, but it’s definitely worth it if you’re already there. I had no idea until I made a comment to the cashier about everyone eating ice cream while checking out.

When I was a kid in the 60's I walked to the Thrifty's at Midtown shopping center to get my ice cream. They used a cylinder server that they would push in the ice cream and squeeze the handle to shoot the cylinder of ice cream out.

The cones ranged from .05, .10 and .15 depending on 1, 2 or 3 cylinders (scoops)

Thrifty's was recently sold to Albertson's. What's left of the original will surely be gone soon.
