According to this article in Curbed LA, Los Angeles added 20,000 new "households" between 2005 and 2011. Fully 89% of them own one or NO cars:

The freeway was still packed today. Looking at you 5 and 110 near Dodger Stadium.

I'm willing to bet there are many 1-car families in LA. You can't go completely car-free in LA.

Within City of LA, I think it's possible and a good thing that's going on but people often forget the fact that a lot of LA-ness are formed by people and things that's "outside" of City of LA. I do wish to see it happen one day, county wise.

I am a huge car person, but I was penny pinching at the time. And I tried to figure out how to go from where I lived to my job and I was sort of shocked at how much trouble it would be to go from Glendale to Pasadena. That was about 8 years ago, but that stuck. The fastest way would be by bike. It was still over an hour and a lot of walking if I went purely by bus. That was a no go, and at that time period I was making close to 6 figures and my time was much more important. Now if someone was to plan where they lived according to their job I could see that working out. But a lot of people have a significant other and then that idea probably goes all to hell in LA.

I am lucky now as I have my own business and work from home. But my other still drives to work. It can be done if you pinch every penny, but sometimes spending more makes a lot more sense than saving a pennies.

And from my post above, the freeways have been really clear this week. That doesn't seem right as school is about to start.

I do agree that is the ideal-- use transportation when you can, the car is still there for when you need it. The relative amounts one would spend using transportation or a vehicle depends on mainly where they live and work amongst other things

I still think car-free is possible and doable but 1-car for a family or couple is ideal (both practically and economically)

One-car family is do-able, but if you choose not to own a car at all, then you are just handicapping yourself and wasting your time.
