Glendale's ban went into effect on July 1. I'm not aware of any other city, other than Los Angeles, banning plastic bags on January 1.

Here is a list I found online on bag bans: Calabasas, Culver City, Glendale, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Malibu, Manhattan Beach, Pasadena, Santa Monica, and West Hollywood. Burbank hasnt voted on it yet, but I expect many other LA county cities to follow over the new few years.

I think also unincorporated LA county has this ban too.

best solution is to keep a couple empty cartons in the trunk of your car and carry out your groceries Costco style.

I know Pasadena enforces it, which doesn't bother me because I've been bringing my own to the store for years now.

This is a really dumb idea. The germs inside these cloth bags often contain some very dangerous strains. The statistics are quite alarming.

The alternative might be paper bags but getting rid of the plastic bags is a health hazard.

The reusable bags I'm reusing are my own. If there is a contamination, it is of my own making.

I have been using the same bags for several years. I periodically wash them with hot sudsy water, rinse and hang on the line to dry in the sun.

The study cited by missourimule speaks to contamination by a specific germ, caused by a specific person. The norovirus was found on the bag after the sick girl had spread her germs in the hotel room. There is no proof that the reusable bag had any germs on it prior to that event.

Any excuse for drama.
