either Father's Office, the Counter or Morton's (the steak joint). I also loved the burger at Belcampo Meat Co, but i've only had it twice (once up in SF, the other time here in Santa Monica) The flavoring/seasoning of Umami burgers is off... i think they use a healthy dose of fish sauce or something.

Personally i feel In-N-Out is horribly overrated, but I give them props for using fresh ground beef, it doesn't taste grisly or mealy like it's been frozen since the last Ice Age.

You should check them out. I have eaten at the one on Union / Fair Oaks (Or is is Raymond?) several times. I love their 50 Alarm, though I think that the waiver they have you sign is a bit of overkill.

I wouldn't be able to nail it down to a specific place, but any of the endless number of hole-in-the-wall burger joints I love. Obviously here in Pasadena Lucky Boy is one of the most famous, but pretty much any of them will do. Lots of lettuce, tomatoes, onions, pickles, usually just ketchup sauce on a big bun with a thin beef pattie. They almost always have enormously-proportioned onion rings too. These places almost always have some sort of pastrami and/or burritos. Sort of like a catch-all of greasy, high-calorie food.
Unfortunately, I usually feel like a beached whale after I have this meal.
Yeah the hat, tops and rick's all have good burgers. I don't think lucky boy's burgers are anything special.

I have been to the slater's in OC and built my own burger. I really did not like the 50‰ bacon patty or whatever it is. I would not order it again. They have a good beer menu though.

Is the Apple Pan still around? They were in WLA, on Pico, I think. I loved their hickory burgers. They also made their own pies that were to die for. I went there a long time ago, & even then it had been there forever.

Burgers from the olden days when I lived there; Bob's Big Boy, Hamburger Hamlet, Tommy's (the original store), Fat Burger, The Apple Pan, Tail o' the Pup. I don't know why I never went to In 'n Out then, I didn't even know it existed. I had In 'n Out the last time I visited and it is my current favorite.

It's still there, with a lunchtime line 3-deep at each seat.

I used to live really close and my family would go often. I read that it was the inspiration for the Johnny Rockets chain.
Just seemed like the place was stuck in time. I'm sure the place is a goldmine for sure.

This is an interesting article about the Apple Pan from 2007
