If you're good, you will get work.

If you have 20 years of experience, are female, and you suck, you will not pass your interview test, and even if you do by some miracle, you won't keep your job. SoCal is very competitive for software programming jobs. They pay a lot of money, and attract a lot of very qualified candidates.

Don't rely on "3 years experience" and "being a woman" to save the day. Be good, and rely on that.

(my background: I own a firm that develops banking software for small to medium financial institutions and employ 70 people)
That makes sense, the only reason why I mentioned my experience is because I was worried that three years wouldn't be enough. Especially because I'm out of state as well and not a local (either way I do want to move to Southern California, I just feel a lot more comfortable having a job lined up before I get there.) I am very good at my job and I do know what I'm doing, so that part isn't really a problem.

I know the place where I work does practical programming tests as part of interview process. You have a marketable skill in LA so might as well start applying for as many jobs as you can now. You should be able to get phone interviews from where you are and bigger companies may fly you out for interview if they are interested. Definitely worth while to try to get a job lined up before moving. You may also get some moving expenses covered if you were able to land a job first

I also work in tech and I'm going to confirm pretty much everything that has been said:

1. being a female is actually an advantage

2. its not about your experience at all, its about your skill. If you really know your stuff and applying to jobs in which you know for sure you can do 80% of the listed requirements you will be fine. There were people in my company who were promoted to senior dev position at the age of like 23 while some other devs were 30 and weren't given that title yet.

3. being out of state is a disadvantage but its still possible. I myself got 3 job offers after skype interviews only and I wasn't really even THAT good yet.

Apply for employment with companies that has federal contracts . According section 503 , Federal law any companies does business with Federal government has to have workforce up to 7% of women , minorities and individuals with disabilities .

The new Section 503 regulations became effective on March 24, 2014. However, contractors with a written affirmative action program (AAP) already in place on the effective date have additional time to come into compliance with the AAP requirements. This compliance structure seeks to provide contractors the opportunity to maintain their current AAP cycle
