Simple. Orange County voted for a 20 year sales tax increase, Prop M, that funded freeway widening and upkeep. They renewed it in 2006 for another 30 years.

Cal Trans, which lobbied heavily for Prop M, knew there would be a bottleneck on the 5 at the LA county line and made no plans to alleviate the congestion when they widened the 5 through Orange County. What did they care? They got a pot full of money from OC taxpayers.

LA prioritized mass transit, to its credit. The problem is that LA (county) is quite spread out and has some huge geographical hurdles (Valley). LA's hunger for mass transit was and is a very expensive endeavor. The maintenance costs alone for such an extensive system is an extravagant splurge for a city filled with so many low income households. This noble but ultra expensive transit push caused LA to neglect the freeways, which OC, for its part, prioritized at the expense of little to no real mass transit.

Meanwhile in OC...on the I-5, OC is expanding the portion of I-5 down in San Juan Cap down to San Clemente, adding two lanes with likely another HOV lane. Construction will also soon begin on adding a lane or two lanes from Avery to the Y on the I-5. Obviously OC has the best roads.

Don't your dare take that away from them. That is the one bright spot in their lives...the liberal, corrupt union boogeyman. The source of all society's evils.....

Not to derail this thread, but very few LAPD officers make $150,000 a year. They have to pay for their own uniforms, guns, and bullets. They work 12-hour shifts without overtime, and they have to go to court on their "day off" if necessary. I know someone who has been a cop for a few years, and she makes ~$65,000 a year. Is that such great money, considering that you're confronting drug addicts, crazy people, etc. on a daily basis?

Yes, that bottleneck is pretty bad; I always say to myself, "Oh, look - Orange County's shining example of good planning! L.A.? Not so much."

I just drove through that stretch of the 5 when I was back home for Memorial Day Weekend. Crossing from Orange County into L.A. County is like night-and-day, but it has been like that for quite some time.

Lots of shady stuff with LAPD pay .

Have you heard of the " DROP" program?
--
Since its inception, 3,407 officers have entered DROP. Some are getting supersized checks as they walk out the door.

This police commander got $800,000. This deputy fire chief, $939,000. And since our first report two years ago, a few DROP members hit the million dollar mark, walking away with seven-figure checks.

Not many people in L.A. know about this so-called "retire for a day loophole."
