Yeah... Assimilation is a *****

Slavs were despised till recently. Idk but it's weird how it was the Germans who were hated, than the Irish, Than the Italians.

Slavs were considered expendable during the 1940's.

One thing this county loves is hate.

Of course its not official till Congress approves it but sources in the census say its pretty sure to pass
Makes sense though, Ive never heard of anyone say middle eastern people are white (especially since 9/11) , they obviously have a completely different history and unique ethnic culture than Europeans
You're presuming Trump's going to get in. At this point it could go either way.

If I was Middle Eastern Muslim that would be the last thing I would want, considering that Trump will probably do to Middle Eastern Muslims what FDR did to Japanese. Much safer to just be grouped in as white.

Of course even if Trump gets in Congress could step in and deny the reclassification of Middle Easterners as a category apart from whites, as he won't have that many allies in Congress.

As someone who's considered white in the US nowadays but who's considered nonwhite in Europe: whiteness in America is fluid and negotiable, to an extent. All it means is Not Black and Not Asian. Otherwise, its definition changes constantly and expands.

Nowadays in the US, it seems like almost everyone wants to be white.

Circa 1960 the population of LA County was as follows:

80% Non-Hispanic White
10% Hispanic
8% Black
2% Asian/Asian-American

Asian Americans in Los Angeles

By comparison, in 1960 the U.S. as a whole was:

85% Non-Hispanic White
3.5% Hispanic
11% Black
0.6% Asian/Asian-American

thanks, interesting and good to know. I still don't think there were many in the 1950s. It is still an interesting bit of history. It shows, some of us, me for sure, don't have all the answers. that's what makes CD so informative, we all have something to offer or our opinions, right or wrong.

FYI there is Blacks Muslim community in the United States way before you are born
You need to be educated on this !
oh, for heaven's sake, you know very well what I meant, I was generalizing. And thanks for the education of religion, and race. Hispanics are not a different race from white either, certainly someone who knows so much would know that. I mentioned Armenians, Jews and Italians as well. I really took OPs question as more cultural than actual race. If his question was referring strictly to race: the answer is simple; as already mentioned: when the first person, other than a native American moved to Los Angeles. Maybe it is you who needs the education. It seems you don't know the difference between race and culture. white.

What good does being white on the census do? The public clearly doesn't accept Middle Easterners as white ,and depending on what you mean by Middle Eastern, they range from blond haired and blue eyed to very Black, and everything in between. And if you count Pakistan as the middle East, there are Muslims that are racially East Asian there (as well as of course South Asian).
