Hi,

I am relocating to LA for work (from Scotland, but Indian origin). My Office is at El Segundo and I am looking to rent something nearby.

We are family of 4, 2 small kids. I would like to avoid travel by car if possible. I am looking something around $2000.

Appreciate if you could advise any good family neighbourhood near El Segundo.

Thanks

Welcome to the LA rental market where rent is crazy and expectations go to die.

2br's in El Segundo are generally ~$2800+, so I highly doubt you'll be able to find a 2br within walking distance for $2000/mo. This may be achievable in Torrance but you will need to drive or take the bus to work.

Can you up your rental budget to $2500? This would expose some 2br options in El Segundo, but nothing pretty.

El-Segundo is good if you can afford the rent. If not, Torrance is your best bet. There is a Torrance Transit (bus service) to El Segundo and there are many Indians too.

Thanks. Shocking Indeed, major part of the take home salary, in accommodation only.

How about Living near Metro and Travelling to work?

Thanks, that would be helpful.

May be I can stay in El Segundo and save the cost/hassle of travel. [Car+Insurance+Maintenance would eventually cost the same I think ?]

You aren't going to want to live in L.A. without a car so I wouldn't do that.

How far away from El Segundo will she be working?

A lot of the middle class and lower population in LA are paying close to 50% take home pay on rent/housing expenses. It's getting out of hand here.

You could probably get to work on the Metro but traveling from an affordable, safe neighborhood on public transit will probably take 1.5 hours each way and changing trains/busses at some places.

People live in LA without a car but it's not easy. And think about your wife and kids. I had neighbors (who were also Indian not that it matters) who only had one car and the wife stayed home with her kid and she basically never left the apartment because she couldn't get around and there was not much walking distance from where they lived.
