Most people I meet never hike or go to the beach.

They seem to go out of their way to post social media posts with them by the beach or pics of the kids they had here going to acting/gymnastics class and say things like "Oh, look another typical day for us in LA/Cali" or "My kids were born at Cedars Sinai" or "Palm trees, the ocean and acting classes today after yoga".

I wonder if Texans get as annoyed when Californians move there and try to be all "Texas" by naming their kids Dale/Cade/Cash/Stetson/Colby, etc. and post social media posts of "Look at us, we are riding horses and doing rodeo...".

These "LA Try Hards" just really annoy the heck outta me.
By your title, are you expressing, SD folks are the ones who are doing this?

Those days are long gone.

Long Beach became my haven. Thankfully it has almost no posers unless you go down to the cliffs or the marina, which you don't have to. Plenty of places with normal people not trying to impress people.

There was a saying that sprang up many years ago that rings so true: "L.A. is full of people trying to impress others who aren't acting impressed because they're too busy trying to impress others who in turn are not impressed." To me, that sums up L.A. for too long now. Don't miss it at all. I live in a small town near a small rapidly growing city. With friendly, less frantic, genuine people.
If not the western part of LA, where was the entertainment industry based out of? Was it entirely confined to Burbank, and Hollywood, or Studio City (I assume cuz of the name)?

The entertainment industry is based in all of those areas, including Century City which is surrounded on all sides by Beverly Hills and Los Angeles and then there is Santa Monica. It's everywhere, many square miles. It dominates every single thing and a lot of natives like myself don't like it at all.

"The entertainment industry took the whole area by storm in the 90's, to its detriment." Where are you getting the 90s from?! Entertainment has been an economically and socially significant industry in Los Angeles for a very long time, predating aerospace, tourism, manufacturing, pretty much every major industry in SoCal except agriculture and oil (which was first discovered in the 1890s but took off roughly around the same time as film). Sony Pictures Studio in Culver City was founded in 1915, Fox Studios in Century City was founded in 1914, Paramount Pictures in 1912, Universal Studios in 1915, Disney and Warner Bros in 1923... you get the picture. And I bet people were still saying then that entertainment brought in all the out-of-town phonies and try-hards.

Why get annoyed by it? Be who you want to be, live and let live, those are the broad-minded attitudes I love about Angelenos.

I already knew the history of the area quite well, thank you. I never heard anyone complaining about Hollywood when I was growing up very close to the area in the 50's, 60's, 70's and part of the 80's. It was a gracious, genteel, low-key place until it started blowing up in the 80's and 90's.

If you have lived in the Los Angeles Basin, you would know that the entertainment industry was completely pervasive (yes I know that's a repeat) since approximately the late 1990's. Before that, it was a manageable situation. It is now completely out of control. I'm not going to say anything further about the situation because it will get me into trouble. Let's just say that there are certain types that have multiplied like rats and they keep multiplying. To be more specific, more than just one type.

After for getting annoyed by it, no I cannot "be who I want to be" in Los Angeles anymore. That's why I don't go there anymore, and live nowhere near it. As for "live and let live" the entertainment types don't allow that. They have they own world (as opposed to being "broad-minded"), and it is off-putting to many others. They have a right to their feelings, and I have a right to mine as do those who understand and agree with my points here.

I think there's a point to the 90's being a timeline. It's when industry started moving to market instead of demand flowing to industry. Up here, we got the tech folks that overran everything.

While the faux monoculture brought isn't great, dressed up movie stars are at least nicer to look at than unwashed hordes of barely social engineers.

"I never heard anyone complaining about Hollywood when I was growing up very close to the area in the 50's, 60's, 70's and part of the 80's." Really? No one ever complained about Hollywood until the 90s? Maybe you are forgetting the disdain for the behavior of actors like Errol Flynn and Charlie Chaplin? McCarthyism blacklist in the 50s? "Hanoi Jane" or the widespread discussion of the "moral decline" that led to the Manson murders in the 60s? Neighbors were good with the heroin and porn palaces on Hollywood Blvd in the 70s? People have ALWAYS complained about Hollywood, whether they lived close by or far away.

I've lived in Los Angeles since 92. I don't see any changes in the entertainment industry that have not also occurred in our society in general.

What do you actually mean when you say "completely pervasive"? Be specific, give examples.

I wonder if anyone could find stats about % of Los Angeles residents employed directly in show business.

And I wonder if that would be any higher than 3%.....
