South Pasadena (Los Angeles, Fremont, Pomona: neighborhoods, school district, quality of life)

Considering moving from New England to South Pasadena for possible new job -- have 3 children, all girls, ages 13, 11 and 7 -- would like to know about South Pasadena neighborhoods, schools, quality of life, etc.... Thanks in advance!

Lovely community. One of the best small cities in LA County and in all of Southern California as a whole. It's kind of like New England without winter.

The public schools are among the best in the state and country. Every single one has a perfect rating of 10 on the Great Schools web site.

Well I may know some about S. Pasadena, I used to work there at a dental office on Fremont and Monterey avenues, and I am origianlly from Los Angeles, I also live in New England, specifically in Medford, Ma and have 4 children. My husband is finishing up dental school at Tufts, and we are also considering moving to South Pasadena where we have some friends. It does have a small town feel to it, but it is small, you can walk around to different areas Fair Oaks Blvd, El Centro Street, Mission St, and it feels safe. People seem to take care of the town, and I got to know a lot of the people by meeting and talking to my patients. There is a mixture of people if you are interested in the demographics, whites, asians, latinos and othere races, and mostly coming from middle to upper middle class families. The schools I understand are good, but I don't know that much about it. Look at the South Pas unified school district site to find out more

Where in New England you are relocating from? We are considering relocating to either South Pasadena or OC from Worcester, MA, and we also have children: two girls (12 and 8) . Supposedly South Pasadena is great, the only draw-back for me is that it's too inland (40 min. away from the beach).Good luck with the relocation. It's so hard to do it from cost-to -cost !

Hey, my husband just passed the CA dental exam and moved out from New England where i stayed with the kids for now. South Pasadena sounds like a very nice place. It's one of two places i am considering : can't decide between SP and Orange County.

Does anyone know anything about Portola Avenue in South Pasadena?

The public schools are top rated. The town is gorgeous. It's very safe. It's an easy drive to Downtown. It's very clean. It's serviced by light rail. It has a wonderful sense of community. I can't think of a much nicer place to live and raise children. There's a very cute downtown and gorgeous parks.

My family has lived there since the 30's.

We moved to Pasadena 13 years ago from the east coast. We loved it because it has an east coast feel to it. South Pas. is beautiful, and the school system is highly regarded. [mod]edit[/mod] Good luck in your search. (I was very sad when we left CT, but now I can't imagine ever moving back.)

I'm also from MA. I grew up in Marshfield and most recently lived on Cape Cod. I may be taking a job in Pomona within the next few months and I got a chance to see Old Pasadena last weekend and I loved it. I heard the commute is not bad at all either and the town seems very upscale. Is this a good choice for a single, young professional to live?

Portola isn't technically in South Pasadena. From my understanding, it's part of Los Angeles.
