a downtown loft would be good for partying and meeting people. otherwise look at highland park, echo, cypress park, and other areas that still have the "hood" elelment, but are in transition. that way you have a safer neighborhood, but also a place where partying is still ok (even at 3 am)

I heard that Eagle Rock is become a better place to live but places like this take years to live. Problem with trying to have a badass place to live in LA is parking. My sisters boyfriend lives in Eagle Rock. She has to travel this narrow steep road where only 1 car can pass at a time and its pretty dangerous too.

The parking issue is rapid all over LA. Pay to park just about everywhere. Not sure how many people are going to be willing to pay to park or park their car in a very questionable area.

Myself, I'd go with Orange County in a heartbeat. You can get a pretty decent place in many areas of Orange County for 600k. But if you like the city vibe more than the beach vibe, I suppose South Bay is a good spot but I think thats over your price range.
