Another vote here for the Highlands. It's a fantastic area to live, and sounds pretty much identical to your neighborhood now.
I know the city has been trying to get people into downtown for several years now, and there are tons of new condos down there. In my opinion I would not want to live there. I wouldn't feel safe walking around at night at all. Other than 4th Street Live (overpriced entertainment district) and various bars, it's pretty dead once the 9-5'ers go home and on the weekends. No good grocery stores. We do have a great performing arts scene here in Louisville, and the theatres are located downtown. But it's not like that's really someplace you can go hang out with your friends each week. Unless you have that kind of money, which I don't :-P

Yes, it is very nice. Also, there is a large new development along the river that is nice that is close to downtown yet not right in downtown proper. Those other buildings you mentioned are very nice though.

WaterSide at RiverPark Place

RiverPark Louisville Kentucky, Lofts and Luxury Condos ( a planned community to develop over 15 years)

We'll have to disagree on this. There is lots to do on Main and Market, and it is not dead after 5, especially after the arena opened. It is very safe in downtown too.

I was on East Market for dinner after 7pm last night, and it was hopping. Hard to find parking, actually.

I can vouch that it has really changed even in the last 6 months. I suspect when the new pedestrian bridge is finished, the new apartments open at River Park Place, and the new housing starts to sprout in the next 2 years at the former Clarksdale (and the Nucleus/Liberty Green infill), downtown will be humming all days of the week, regardless of special events at Slugger Field, Theatre events, conventions, or events at Yum. An Nba team would be icing on the cake to ensure nearly daily after dark vitality even in the cold winter months, when downtown tends to die down when UofL has no game at Yum.

With regards to downtown vitality, I think Louisville may be a few shades behind peers like Indy or Nashville--but those two cities do not have a Highlands, Old Louisville, Crescent Hill, Clifton, etc. Regionally, I think Louisville's downtown vibrancy is pretty much on par with similar cities such as Oklahoma City, Cincinnati, Columbus, and Milwaukee, and is doing much better than places like Birmingham or stalemates like Buffalo or on a larger scale, Detroit. I travel with some regularity to many of these cities and stay in their CBDs.

downtown is nice, and it is improving. I just think the highlands has a lot more to offer and can actually be a bit less expensive for housing.

No matter where you decide to live I hope you like to eat out and drink coffee! Louisville is a foodie town. Visit Please and Thank you and Sunergos. 2 of my favorite places. I also love Cherokee park and the 2.5 mile walking loop. Lots of dog walkers there. Welcome to Louisville!

P.S if your husband is working over in the south end you might want to look at Beechmont. You can walk your dog on Southern PKWY or at Iroquois park.

Um......maybe I'm directionally impaired, but would not your husband be working in southWESTERN Louky? $1000 - 1500 will be hard in the Highlands. South of Gene Snyder there are some really decent areas. Forget Downtown..........you will have to drive for groceries, other shopping, etc.
