I live in central Maine. Last night, august 10th, around 9:30 I saw what looked like a very bright star to the northwest. I told my roommate to come look. We watched for about 10 minutes. This thing kept jumping left to right and back again. Then it went behind the trees and came back out. It dropped down and then jumped way up again. It kept jumping from place to place untill it finally went over the trees on the horizon. Strange. It couldn't have been a plane or helicoptor because it jumped so fast. And we didn't hear any engines.

If it was flying, and you don't know what it is/was, then it's a ufo.

Probably Venus. It is very bright in the western sky now right around sunset. Temperature inversions and approaching fronts like we had last night can make low horizon stars and planets seem to jump around. The air piles up in the frontal boundry as it rises and falls. This causes a lensing effect that makes planets and stars seem to be moving. You see this on windy nights as well when the winds rise after sunset. Although it is not windy at ground level it is quite windy aloft and again you get the lensing effect.
Or it could have been a flying saucer.

I should have known not to bother. I kind of knew what the nasty replies would be. And no, I wasn't drinking. I give up. Lately it's all been infighting and name calling.

I think you're taking the replies way too personally.

You saw something you couldn't identify flying around your area. That makes it a UFO - unidentified flying object.

Keep in mind everyone here likes to play around and have a good time. It's all be fun and in jest. No one has said anything to put you down. Lighten up!

I gave you a pretty straight forward answer. Asking us if what you saw was a UFO is like asking us if the bigfoot you saw was real. It is instantly viewed with a bit of skepticism. We didn't see it you did. I also agree with mrs1885 people need to lighten up on here.
