From earlier this week, at Vaughan Woods in Hallowell. Wasn't the smartest thing I've ever done, going to a spot with lots of clear running water in the height of black fly season! This is Vaughan Brook, not too far from Cascade Pond.

It's a great spot, but the flies were *very* bad. I'm going to go back this fall - should be really nice then.

We were on a trail to Donnell Pond a couple of days ago and there were clouds of them. Last year we didn't encounter any of the little buggers.

This eagle begged for fish as soon as we caught the first one. It left a pine tree when the fish jumped and circled the boat. It's mate (banded by Charlie Todd) watched but didn't beg. They have a nest nearby. The blob is the front seat on the deck and gives an idea of how close the eagle came to the boat.
