We live in Brunswick, but behind our house is several acres of wetland. Last night, our dog started barking at the back door, and when I turned on the light, something ran out of one of the trash cans.

We've had raccoons before, but this wasn't a raccoon. I saw large white stripes down the back, so my first thought was a skunk, but it was MOSTLY white. I saw one vertical stripe down the backbone, but then two very large white stripes paralleling that. And it was bigger than most skunks I've seen in the area.

Is it possible it was a badger? I've never heard of badgers in Maine, but I admit I'm not a wildlife expert.

Something else...?

It may have been a fisher (I've seen odd-colored ones over my lifetime - they're mainly brown/black 'tho) and I've also seen oddly-marked skunks as well. I haven't seen one quite as oddly marked as the one in the link, but close.

It could have also been a large housecat maybe?

And I Think to Myself...What A Wonderful World.: Creature Feature: Spotted Skunk.

In either case, don't stand too close to the back of it.

There are white skunks around. Sounds most likely.

Yup, probably a skunk. I've seen every variety of those things. If it's a fishercat, watch out for your dog, They can gut one very quickly. One decimated the cat population near downtown Augusta about 5-6 years ago.

I can't help it, but I've seen it mentioned on here a couple of times... The animal is not a fishercat. It is just a fisher. It is a part of the weasel family. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fisher_(animal)
