Even the thread's title is hyped. ...Maine can be naughty. It's a story about a handful of people, not the state of Maine.

We have previously lived in areas where hookers were on the streets, plainly visible. Arrests [and I assume convictions] were common place. Such that it was not 'news'.

Here it seems that a prostitution arrest happens once every year or two. Suddenly it is played as a big 'crime wave'. But we are seeing a single female doing this every couple years. To me that speaks of how low the crime really is here.

Assuming a population of 1.5 Million people and only 1 female decides to be a pro each year. In my version of reality that is a super low crime rate.

The media is in a frenzy, largely because they have so little else to report.

It is like our local newspaper in it's Police Log, when the biggest crime of the past week was someone called to complain about a drunk walking on the sidewalk. That is not an indication of a wave of sidewalk walking drunks. It is an indication of no real crime happening.

Perhaps prostitution should be legalized and regulated and the sex workers protected...but (IMHO) while it is a crime....the guilt is more with the "johns" than the women....and any shame they bring on their families or destruction of their careers....is of their own doing. They are not being pimped out and used...they perpetuate the problem....and their wives deserve to know so they can seek medical evalutation as needed to protect themselves and to get treatment as needed.
You couldn't have said it better.

Why do women stoop so low? I've been poorer than a church mouse and I would be darned if I would have prostituted myself out. There are homeless shelters, soup kitchens.

Had she filed taxes on her income there would be no felony charges against her, only misdemeanor charges.

I wonder if she could have pulled that off? It seems like she could just declare it as part of her exercise small business. I don't think they get down in the weeds enough to want to know what kind of exercise.

Wasn't she collecting welfare also? I'm thinking that's why she didn't declare the income.

The story is hyped because of who is potentially on "The List." It's rather ridiculous yes, but is anyone really surprised?

"High end" (for lack of a better term) prostitutes usually don't wear signs, or for that matter, rarely (if ever) walk the streets. They usually advertise on the internet now, or evidently open dance studios. Apparently they're keeping up with the times.

I recently attended a human trafficking inservice at work. Think it doesn't happen in Maine? Think again.

Still, it's (as usual) far less frequent in Maine than in larger cities, and Maine is still relatively quiet in that regard.

I think there are bigger things to be concerned about in Maine right now than the oldest profession.

It is my understanding that commonly in the prosecution of crimes it is the un-disclosed income [and lack of taxes paid] that becomes the bigger 'crime'.

Simply reporting the income as from an 'undisclosed source', or 'gambling winnings' is sufficient to resolve the tax issue.

Not to imply that I have ever done such a thing, mind you.
