Yes it is! We would hike it 3 or 4 times a summer as a youth. Of course this was in the general vicinity of the lost Vermont hunter and is quite an expanse of backcountry.

I'm thinking that as ungraceful as I am I shouldn't climb a mountain named Tumbledown.

Anyone want to go to Sandy Stream Pond to see the moose with me in June? It's a very simple walk.

One set is about 2 miles out of Fort right where there is a red barn right on the river bank. Park in the lot in front of the barn and there is a good chance one or two will glide by, they used to have a nest right on the island in the middle of the river right behind the barn, but a wind storm took down the tree. There is an effort going to put up a permanent structure for them to build a new one on in the Spring. Another pair nest right behind my brothers house about another 3 or 4 miles further toward Caribou. Keep your eyes open and there is a good chance of seeing one. When you get to Caribou, take a left at the light after the bridge over the Aroostook River and you are on the road that will take you to Houlton, ME and 95 South. Stop at Irvings Big Stop on the left as you are coming into Houlton for a good meal if it is around time to eat.
Just my opinion, but I'd rather eat at the Blue Moose, on the right before you get into Houlton itself...or the diner on the left in Mars Hill (I can't remember the name at the moment).

Now that you mention it, you're right. The diner in Mars Hill is (drum roll please) Al's Diner. Just like all the cartoons. I never think about the Blue Moose either for some reason. Both ARE better than Irvings.

Sorry if this site has been mentioned. I didn't get a chance to read the entire thread. There are a lot of vacation rentals listed at: http://www.vrbo.com/vacation-rentals/usa/maine (broken link). We'll be using this site when we plan out trip in the spring. (If this link gets deleted, I'll be happy to send it by direct message.) Hope this helps!
