Not being smug but that is an expense of having a business, paying employees and if they are good employees ,to keep them paying them well. Many employers were not doing that and this is the result. When gas was $2.00 a gallon more and grocery companies and moving companies were all cutting back there was outrage but people had to adjust ,again I understand and I'm not being a smart ass but people and companies have to adjust .

Yes, labor is one of the costs of doing business. Smart business owners realize that it is easier to keep employees than train new ones so they try to pay competitive wages. When wages (or any other cost) can't be controlled, the business may fail. Arbitrary wage increases in labor costs imposed by the government can be enough to cause a business to fail. I would guess that many businesses adjusted to increased gas prices by closing their doors. Wages should be determined by the market - without government interference.

In theory you are correct but it has been proven theory doesn't always work out right.

Which part of their communities? The workers who lose jobs? The poor old people who have to pay more for things??
Those parts?

It will be a toss-up.

Both the recently unemployed and the retirees with shrinking buying power, will both see roughly the same level of benefit.

I can't understand the terrible math skills and lack of common sense that leads people to think that hiking up the min wage helps anybody other than those who don't try at all in life. There the same people who years later will be crying that their job has been devalued when their mid grade pay is close to minimum wage so out with them and in with the newbie.

Nexlinx in Orono just announced they are laying off 100, largely due to the minimum wage hike.

Great.

I just looked at employee reviews of Nexlinx because I had never heard of it before. It think they are a telephone support/sales company based in Pakistan with offices around the world.

This review sounded fairly even handed:

"You are bottom-of-the-barrel customer support for TWC!"

Former Employee - Customer Service Representative in Orono, ME
Pros
-Not difficult
-Can be rewarding if you're good at it
-Requires literally zero qualifications
-$10/hr with part and full-time positions
-They don't care if you call out
-Opportunities to rise in company
-Different themed days every week
-Training is easy and a good way to make quick cash for 30 hrs a week
Cons
-People can be extremely difficult
-You don't work for TWC, just contracted, so no one really cares about you
-People can be extremely irate and scream
-You constantly need to be pushing customers into staying with their crappy plan

So... how did the minimum wage have such an effect if they were already paying $10/hour?
THey may be like a lot of companies who used "Obamacare" are an excuse for planned layoffs.

Because if EVERY place has to pay $10 an hour now, this place will have a hard time getting and keeping decent employees.

So---close it up. Bye bye, job. (Oh well, just go on the dole).
