Anyone else planning to attend the MOGFA Small Farm Field Day on May 31?

I am seriously thinking about it, and hoping to get an early enough start that maybe I can join the scythers as this is something I have wanted to learn for a long time. Looks like lots of good workshops!

I was looking at that.

I do not know what our schedule will be like then.

Feel free to scythe any of our weeds and brush. I bought a new scythe last fall at the hippy fair, and I have been using it on the brush coming up in our orchard.

The MOFGA weekly email does have lots of really cool activities scheduled.

Many Maine farms do offer apprenticeship programs.

You are welcome to come and see what we do.

Help with our chickens, goats, orchard, garden, picking fiddleheads, etc; if you wish.

Everything in it's season of course.

Here soon I must butcher a Wether. He is a big guy, likely around 175 pounds.

Last fall we butchered a 250 pound hog; KAF and T were here, and that helped a lot! It was still a great deal of work.

After having spent some time using a scythe, I can tell you that it really isn't as much fun as it looks. The price for the fuel is cheaper than for the brush cutter/weed whacker.

K says I will hate him the next day for not stopping me from doing this <g> But the price of fuel is NOT what is driving me... but being able to work, in quiet solitude. We have an electric lawn mower and I had an aging electric string trimmer in town.. much nicer to work with, in my opinion, than their gas-fired counterparts but still noisy.

I KNOW it will be hard work and I will likely not be able to keep it up as long as I would hope... but If I learn how, and have the tools, I can do it... if need be in smaller bits, as one often does things as youth's strength and stamina wanes.

I used to be able to spend the day turning soil with a spading fork too... That, too, is something I do in smaller increments these days.

I love mine. I have a grass blade for mowing and a ditch blade for saplings. I bought mine from Carol at Scythe Supply in Perry. She takes measurements to fit the snath to you so that it's not too long or short. I tried two snaths before making a choice and had a lesson in mowing. It's not difficult once you get the hang of it. Once you get into a rhythm it's almost mindless work.
