Hello,

A few friends and I are looking around for an apartment and most of them include everything BUT electricity. So I am wondering what the average cost of electricity is? I know that bills will vary from locations and usage of appliances, but knowing what a few others are paying in the area will be helpful for us to choose a place.

The place we checked out today was completely redone (the house was pretty much rebuilt from the ground up) and totally furnished with all new appliances and the owner estimated (based off of another property he rents out) that electricity wouldn't be any higher than 110. So is that good? three of the 4 of us think it would be amazing, but the 4th thinks that is TOO expensive for electricity (the others of us think she is nuts).

So yeah, if some of you could help me out with the bill you pay for electricity that would be awesome!

Thanks a lot!

Four students in a rented house? Four FEMALE students in a rented house?

I'll wager your montly electric bill will run between $100 and $250.

It will ALWAYS be more than you think it will be.

what do you have for hot water and heat? those are two major determining factors--and how old are the appliances?

If you have a HWBB system in the house your hot water is heated off that more efficiently than if you have a hot water tank. If it's a "tankless" system run on propane then you won't be using electricity to heat water, so that will help with the $. If you have a forced hot air heating system you will find that those cost more to run--the electricity has to run that fan that forces the air. This is typical stuff, but of course you have to factor in the age of the systems too. A 20 year old HWBB system is going to cost more to run than a 3 year old FHA system.

Lived in WTVL most of my life. Never had an electric hot water heater as we had HWBB with the hot water straight off the furnace. Our light bill, in the cooler months was $60 - $70 a month. During the summer months when the A/C's were running almost 24/7, the bill was $140- $160.

If you have FHA heat with an electric hot water heater, you will need to add probably $40 to $50 a month for that depending on how new it is, if it's wrapped, etc.

I saw that the over all average electric price is rated at 100, Maine was rated at 104. So a little higher then the average in the USA.

My friend owned a house is Maui and told me that water and electric was about $300-$500mo .

He lived there for 1 year. LOL.....

Our Bangor Hydro bill ran about $90 per month. The biggest electric hogs were the hot water heater, and the clothes dryer. The heat, and cook stove were gas. It is about .20 cents per kilowatt hour, about double of what I pay here in Florida.

So, wife is getting a clothes line for the summer...and I am turning down the HWH to 120 degrees, doing exactly what the lifetime Mainers said to do.
