There aren't many really "bad" places in Maine. The only town I would not live in is Lewiston (sorry to say). Too dysfunctional.
In the country, you have to be aware of marijuana growing ops. We just had HUGE bust in Washington County.......out in the middle of nowhere. That's what they do.......find the most remote place where they think they won't get caught. If you buy 100 acres, check it all out now and then to make sure that someone is not "using" it.
Camps are generally VERY safe in northern Maine. Not sure about southern Maine.
The further you go, the more woods, wildness, etc. you get. The best deer hunting is in southern and central Maine.
One correction about the statement that the further north, the less people there are: once you leave central Maine, there IS a stretch of woods with few people, extending clear across the state. There's just a handful of small towns in there (Jackman, Greenville, Lincoln, Calais, Baileyville, etc.). But then you hit the County (Aroostook), which has 100,000 acres of farmland and some good -sized towns--Houlton, Presque Isle, Caribou, Fort Kent, Madawaska. (Madawaska and Edmunston N.B. are connected and have over 20,000 people). The WESTERN half of the County is almost all forests and wildnerness. Some great places in there for someone who wants to really get away.....
And there isn't much tolerance up here for some of the foolishness you're complaining about (racial politics, special interests, etc). Just decent, common sense people.

Now Maineah! You continually disparage the County and all of its 70,000 residents! lol Granted, that's not A LOT, but I was just trying to give the OP a sense of the "pocket" up here, straddling both sides of the border. Altogether, between the eastern part of the County and northwestern NB, there are around 150,000 in a fairly small area. Surprised???
You should come see for yourself, you might be further surprised at this place!! You wouldn't be the first to have that happen.....

It was a joke....don't get your undies in a bunch! I go to The County several times a year. I'll be in your town in a week or two for a bird trip. I know there are more than three people up there...there's at least a dozen! Here's a deal.....you stop calling the southern part of Maine North Boston and I'll admit there are more than a dozen people between Bangor and Ft. Kent!!!

Ahh, I see! You're doing the old "trick them into thinking that nobody in their right mind would want to live there" thing, to help us not get overrun! Thanks! lol
And good luck with the birds........hope the weather's good for you.

Thanks we look forward to this trip every fall. We've been doing it since the early 80's SSSHHHH! You have to keep Northern Maine a secret! I want to be able to bring my GRANDKIDS up to the most beautiful part of the state when they grow up! (if I ever get any grandkids!) . I like The County just the way it is!!! I like the ocean but I'll take sunrise over a big spud field anyday!

Yeah, but all three are blood related and they have each been married to the same woman.

So it seems like there are lots of them.
