Maine's Off Topic thread: part seven (Rockland: to live, moving, eat)

I was driving into Rockland yesterday afternoon and saw a couple of turkeys beginning to cross the road. I slowed down, and ended up having to come to a complete stop while twenty birds contemplated which side of the road they would like to be on. Eventually, they all crossed.

They really made my day!!!

The population is increasing and moving north. good to see.

It is good to see them coming back. We have quite a population up here - and no, they don't seem to mind making you wait for them to cross the road.

In Hawaii, during a rare hurricane, a large amount of chickens escaped. Now the island is completely over-run with chickens. They are literally everywhere. There are fried chicken stands all around the island running full time every day.

Turkeys are tick ridden menaces! Have you ever seen one freshly killed?? The amount of ticks they carry is horrendeous. They will spread ticks through the entire state eventually. I'm 100% convinced turkeys are directly responsible for the explosion in the tick population and the subsequent proliferation of Lyme disease in Southern Maine.
They eat all of the feed indiginous species rely on to live.
They breed like rats and are too stupid to stay out of roadways where they pose a threat to cars and especially motorcyclists. Introducing them to Maine was a big mistake.
Biologists are beginning to see the folly in the introduction of this bird and have suggested longer and longer hunting seasons on them. There should be a bounty on them!
Maybe fried turkey stands should be a government priority!

I agree, they are nothing more than a major PITA now and fully agree with a bounty!

Speaking of bounty's, I'd also love to see one on new posters that respond to threads that died over two years ago.

Yes, I can see your point, but I don't think they're any worse than those pretty Canadian poop factories that come here every summer.

They're fun to watch, but wow, can't they make a mess of farm ponds and fields.

I started my new job in the produce department. I'm loving it. I can spend my day with all the bright colors, smells, textures. So much nicer than spending the day with a bunch of brown boxes.
