I'd like to get a real feel here from people living within the state.
Is Pete's Dragon generally viewed positively by the majority of Mainers or does the majority of the population feel disdainful for it for perpetuating stereotypes of coastal life/Northern New England folk?

It's just a movie from 1977 based on a story from the 1950s. It's for kids (mostly) and not meant to be taken seriously. I never felt it perpetuated any stereotypes any morfe than asking you what exit you're from (Spent 9+ years in Jersey at McGuire AFB; exit 7). People spend far too much time looking for something to get upset over, IMHO.
Bob, rent it. It's pretty good even though a bit sappy.
My kids (and now grandkids) like it. Everybody knows it is just a story, but we can still explore Passamaquoddy (Eastport) looking for Elliott and hoping the Gogans are gone. I read the story to my kids, so when my granddaughter was born, I got a copy of the book and the DVD so my daughter could share the fun with her daughter.
It's a fun story for kids to watch. Nobody got any bad conceptions of Mainers from watching it. Something about the lighthouse never looked quite right, but I'd have to go watch it again to remember what looked wrong. MW, I could send you my copy for a 2nd opinion if you like.
I see that there are a few clips of the movie available on youtube. Can't say I have ever seen the movie, though....
As far as perpetuating stereotypes... I seriously hope that the rest of the world does not think that we Mainers randomly break into musical numbers, based on this movie.
(I'm more bothered that most people now think of Maine as...creepy. Thank you for that, Mr. King. )
