Hi,

I am accepting a job offer at Ft. Meade after this semester is over and I am looking for a decent place to live around the Ft. Meade area. My main concern is commute time and cost. I will be getting a decent paycheck but with my student loans I would like to keep the rent for a 1br/studio under 830$/mo if possible. Also I heard that traffic can be a beast in that area, when I google-map things to Ft. Meade, if it shows up as say 25 min. (outer-Annapolis to Ft Meade) is that accurate or what is the average time to tack on for the morning/nightly commute?

I like to be a fairly active person, and being straight out of college I would like to find a nice (not 'student ghetto') place with a fairly young population and fun things to do in the area. Right now I am leaning towards the sorta outskirts of Annapolis or Baltimore (I don't have any precise areas yet, working on that) as I am a rower and would like to row in the mornings for one of the clubs if possible.

I appreciate any help that anyone is willing to give.

You will have to decide between commute time or cost. You won't find anything nice close by for $830. Traffic in this area is terrible period, but it depends on the hours you are commuting. If I were you I'd try to get a roomate in a nice house closer to work.

Why do people insist on referring to South Baltimore as Federal Hill? Federal Hill is a park. I guess that South Baltimore is not gentrified enough for the transplants who are paying exorbitant prices for homes that sold for less than $10K in the seventies (homes that could not be given away in the sixties after white flight seriously took hold in the city).

You answered your own question. I suppose you could attempt a resurrection of the old moniker ... but I wouldn't wager on your success.

The entire South Peninsula is gentrified now. In the Real Estate world It's considered Federal Hill and Locust Point. Good luck buying or renting or buying by searching South Baltmore. I live in the South Baltimore neighborhood and it's exhausting explaining to people where I live. Your average person considers South Baltimore the entire southern third of the city. So I just say Federal Hill, if they really know the area I'll explain further. There really isn't much if a difference between the 1000 and 1800 block of Charles anymore... It's all nice and expensive.

With that said, The federal hill area is where you want to be....but you'll need a roommate. It's a young adult playground.

What kind of commute time do you think it would be from Federal hill at say 730am?

And why Federal Hill over someplace in Annapolis?

Thanks

If the Annapolis area is OK, I guess you're OK with living in the suburbs rather than the city. If that's the case, you might want to check out Gambrills, Harmans, Odenton, Jessup, Glen Burnie, Linthicum, Ferndale. As far as fun things to do in the area, if you're living in the suburbs, you'll be driving just about anywhere you go anyway.

Try looking in the Maryland Gazette/Evening Capital ads.

Fort Meade is typically about a 15-20 minute drive from Federal Hill, not sure about how long at 730am. Several people on my block commute to the base everyday as well as a friend who teaches on the school there. I'd say 30 minutes at the most but give yourself 45 the first day to get a feel.

Annapolis is cool, but it's pretty much a suburb. Not a lot of young people there that don't live with their parents.
