So, what is it about Savage that is bad? The mean streets of Savage Mill?

It's usually a quiet, laidback little working-middle class enclave that will only be a "bad" area if and when the growth expanding from both Howard County and Columbia sandwich it in completely. Then there will be much higher housing prices and greater pop. density and the more serious problems those bring. There's rarely anything seriously bad that happens here and most of the little streets and the houses on them are nothing fancy, but pleasant and decently kept.

How about pretending you aren't afraid of your own shadows? Stop crying. You'll die from eating crappy fast food thrice a week before the notorious Howard County thugs, Javier and Devante can jack you on your way out of Chi-Chi's.
rofl so true...
I think they should move to ........greenland!

on the side note..i think this thread should be titled " People that we should avoid " lol

I almost hate to reply to this thread since so many have dragged it through the mid, but.... for those who want good info,
I think part of the issue is that this county is diverse and sometimes people are uncomfortable if they don't fit in a neighborhood, because that can be a target on your head. But I agree with Long Reach. I once lived near the hospital, but yes, it's getting bad. Owen Brown -- to much path crime. Savage and Jessup I can't speak for, but Savage was where the nation's first nationally reported car jacking took place -- Pamala Basu was dragged to death by some thug stealing her car. Nearly two decades later my stomach still drops and feels for her family . I think the guy who did it came from a near by park and ride, so that could feed into the bad neighborhood thing.

I think they're just comparing the areas along rt 1, with the rest of Ho Co. It's definitely not as nice- evidenced by the some of the businesses along that area of rte 1, many of which are boarded up. There are some new housing developments going up in Elkridge along rte 1, which I think will be a boost.
By the way, not everyone who thinks an area is sketchy blames it on race. Maybe you should ask people to explain their opinions before accusing them of racism.

Actually there's very sketchy section 8 housing near Fort Meade. I think Fort Meade is in Howard, but I agree with the Savage comment total trash and very bad neighborhood. Its like the Howard County version of Dundalk. Oh yea also agree with the Laurel part of Hoco it is so sketchy and low class. Porno stores and Beer Stores all along the rt 1 area. It is no place to raise children! Unless they're red-headed step children!

I lived in Columbia from 1989-1996 in Owen Brown. It changed for the worst during that period (increasing traffic, elimination of "blending with environment" guidelines for businesses, massive construction) thanks to developers who bullied the County Council. Oakland Mills, Wilde Lake, Long Reach (Lazy Hollow/Section 8), Thunder Hill and the area south of Guilford Road off Snowden River Parkway (Section 8) are other areas to avoid. Too much "thug" traffic around those areas (including Owen Brown). I used to refer to Owen Brown as "North Laurel".
