We are looking into relocating somewhere around the Concord area with good schools. We have 5 children and a couple of them play soccer. I would be willing to commute as far as 30-40 miles in order to get an affordable home. New Hampshire is a possibility. Any suggestions? $200k-400k would be cosidered.
Don't know where you are in Michigan but 30-40 miles here could take a lot longer than 30-40 miles there since the traffic is heavy and roads often not direct. Are you OK being in the middle of nowhere or would prefer a more populated area? Houses are expensive in the area close to Concord. New Hampshire is not necessarily a good deal for you since you'd pay Mass. income tax working in Mass., while many towns in NH have high property taxes since they don't have a state income tax. It could be the worst of both worlds.
The area around Sterling is nice but for a family of your size you'd probably be looking at the high end of your price range anywhere around here. Maybe around Groton?
Yes, I have set 30-40 miles as distance that might need to be traveled. We need at least a 4 bed and preferably no less than 2000sq ft that isn't a money pit. New build or ideally less than 15 yrs. We would ideally like at least 1/2 acre or more.

I guess going west from Concord that might be at the outer limits of possibility. My experience is more with older homes closer to Boston, but in the eastern half of Massachusetts there is not a ton of new built stuff and it tends to be high end. Definitely you'd have to look away from Boston but even so anything new, big, and with 1/2 acre will be pretty expensive. I think Mass. is a bargain since I live in New York City right now, but people coming from the Midwest and the South are shocked by the fact that most of the housing stock here is older and smaller than what they're used to and a lot more expensive. It's a great area but it's expensive. You might get something at the high end of your range but something might have to give.
I seriously doubt that you will find a 2000 sq.ft. home for under $400k let alone on half an acre in Concord, and definetly not less than 15 yrs. old. Maybe Littleton or Chelmsford on the price, not size or that new IMO. Most of the homes here are antiques and great pride is taken in that fact. Some new homes in Acton but I don't know the price.
Work will be in Concord 50% of the time. Travel on the other 50%. So I don't have an issue with a little extended driving. I understand the cost of living in Concord, that is why I'm considering a distant drive.
Have you subscribed to any local Real Estate sites that you can put in your criteria and you will get daily updates? Also check Realtor.com. They will both give you MLS listings. I'm sure other posters here can offer other suggestions. Good luck.

Your best bet would be to go west from Concord, along Route 2 or somewhere near 190. Anything heading toward Boston or the towns south along 128 in the Weston/Wellesley/Dover area would be way too expensive and most homes are older. I'd focus on towns like Groton, Ayer, Sterling, Shirley, Leominster, Holden. Under 15 years old will be tough anywhere in that price range, Massachusetts is old.
