For decades, Amherst was on my list of 10 possible places to move to someday. Not any longer. Just reading of the title of this post thread did it. Amherst was removed.
Incidentally, I was a Amherst resident for a short time some decades ago.
The guy is from Belchertown, but Amherst is overrun with fruitcakes such is this. Ever been out there? It's a very strange place...
So is Northampton. If you live there you learn to laugh at a lot of the stuff. Arrogant professors, there are a lot of them and too much time on their hands, out of touch with the real world. The normal, down to earth people are vastly outnumbered.

Northampton is a strange place; stranger than Amherst, most likely.
Can a place be rich and gritty at the same time? Northampton is that place. One minute, you're browsing fine artworks in a high-end gallery. The next, you're strolling through Thorne's and a teen-twenty-something who is clearly high on hard drugs asks you for water. Homeless people panhandle outside of boutique clothing stores that charge $200 for chic blouses. But it's all good. It all works.
What is the real world? And who is in touch with it? I'll take Northampton over most towns in the state. One of the best arts communities in the country.
I love living my normal life in Northampton, and I'm neither an arrogant professor nor a homeless panhandler. Live and let live folks; the vast majority is just fine.

My limited encounters there suggest that Florence is still mostly nice, down to earth folk. The rest of the city, not so much. Perhaps that is where most of the local type population remains? I guess Northampton attracts specific types of transplants. Some aloof chip-on-their-shoulder types. Some with mental health issues. Some both.
