Only 10% of voters are registered as Republican and about 34% are registered democrat. The majority of voters in Mass (more than half) are unenrolled. I have found always found these statistics slightly fascinating. Maybe it's our independent Yankee spirit?

You can still find individual yankee specimens in eastern Mass, if you luck out and find a suburban yankee holdout whose family used to own half your overdeveloped town and has quietly held on to an island of it. They’re there, I have found some in Wellesley (surprisingly) and Millis and Norfolk. Gets easier to find in rural areas like the farm belt Westa Wistah east of Quabbin, maybe somewhere around Lakeville in SE Mass. Gets easy in northern New England states. You don’t even need to go far north of the border, like go try any of the rural towns outside Keene or Milford. Yanks are often moonlighting as the townies in popular vacation areas like the NH Lakes regions. Vermont is rife but is losing them in ski resort / mondo-boutique 3%-er areas like Stowe, Woodstock, Manchester where the average Massahole might visit to coo about the gilded facsimile of quaintness.

I think you find this trend many many places nationwide. But if you look how these unenrolled/independents actually vote, they overwhelmingly prefer 1 party.

The point here to me is that Dems outnumber Republicans more than 3-1. That sounds about right.

That's true because a lot of people like to believe that they vote for the person not the party but somehow the better person is always in the same party.

I am a longtime fan of Yankee culture, it's very close to traditional Chinese culture (except for the arranged marriage thing). Maybe that's why I moved up to NH.

And in regards to being a conservative politically, it's because I believe in fiscal and personal responsibility and everyone pulling their own weight. I don't support government handouts like welfare and free breakfasts for the students from poor families. I live frugally and never buy a new car. When I need more money, I find part time work to do.

Don't conflate being 'republican' with being a 'social conservative'. Baker is former, but certainly not the latter. Contemporary Dems are more conservative than Bush senior.

It's true, and the problem most people I know have with the Dem party.
They've swung so far to the right overall, they are useless. We have a far right and center right parties in this country, which don't generate interest in progressives to vote. And look at the horrific result.
