What a nightmare if they are both done at the same time.

Yeah, it could be tough. I imagine that they'd keep the old bridges open in their full capacity during construction and build the new bridges alongside the old ones. Not unlike what they did for the Jamestown Bridge or Sakonnet River Bridge in RI. If they time it right (so that the shifting of traffic from the old to the new, which will require lane shifts, closures, and squeezes, happens in the off season), it shouldn't be too bad.

That's what they did in Weymouth and it wasn't bad. I actually didn't notice a new bridge was being built at first.

The one in Hadley/Northampton (Coolidge?) bzack in 2002-2006 was bad though. It was under construction when I entered as a freshman at UMass and still being worked on when I graduated. The bottle neck during move in/move out or school vacations were terrible.

Yeah, I experienced that one a few times too. It was rough. I'd hope that between federal funding and making these bridges a state priority, it'll be a better experience. There's going to be a ton of pressure to get it right.

TBH the way things are going the Cape is going to be abandoned by 2060 anyway. If the Air Force wants new bridges, I guess, but it might just be easier to find some land on the other side of the canal and build a new base.

But they don't need to do them both at once, do they? 3 lanes vs 2 would add 50% more capacity, which sounds good... the glass is half-full

Huh? The Cape abandoned by 2060? Is that when Sharknado-East happens?

I don’t get the traffic concerns. Most of the construction will be on parallel roadways.

Worse, economics. FTP is in pretty much permanent decline on the Cape, and it makes sense when less and less people can retire. The way things are going, by 2060 nobody will be retired and it'd be tough to live there full time since jobs that pay anything are extremely scarce on the Cape as it is.

The cape is shrinking faster then the Berkshires. Say what you will about the Berkshires but it has rt 2, the pike and rt 8. The cape is seasonal with little academic activity and few major employers.

The Berkshires will lose about 50% of its population by 2060 the cape even more so.

I'll believe it when I see it.
