Pittsfield has the unmistakable scares of being a tossed aside GE town. I grew up near Schenectady, another EG ex. GE was like a narcissistic lover that destroyed the towns they left. They never really recover. The area is good imo. Lots of culture for an American region thats not a major metro. Jacob's Pillow is one of my absolute favorite places. Near by is Springfield (not uninteresting), North Hampton (spelling? Sorry). Theres Stockton, Hudson NY, very close which is interesting, I love to spend an afternoon at Fredrick Church's house. Woodstock, NY and the Catckills are close too. There are loads of interesting towns all around there. It's really a hidden little gem of an area. You wouldnt be sorry if you ce especially when you consider the cultural richness of the area in terms of the arts. Congratulations on your job offer.

I'm not saying Pittsfield is bad but it's the fact that there isn't nearly as much around it and the distance between it and other urban areas is much further. It's not like there's that much of public transit to the nearest area. There's more people in Springfield alone than the whole county. Heck include Chicopee and there's more in those two than it and Franklin. If the city was in the eastern part of the state or even central it would do much better. You pretty much have to have a car. To a point some of the problems aren't really Pittsfield but the lack of development in the surround area. To go from a urban area to one without any streetlights and public lighting within ten minutes is a bit odd. The area should probably just consolidate to a handful of areas and let the other communities sort of die off. It's really hard to prop up a town of a few thousand or less and you have a somewhat stable place of 40K just sitting there.

Ottos Kitchen and Comfort downtown is pretty good with fresh, American and New England-style fare in modern, urbane atmosphere.

Downtown Pittsfield

there's a good Italian place too but I forget the name..ugh
